Headache treatment is the third most common musculoskeletal complaint behind lower back pain and neck pain. Hence, they are a common condition seen at The Physicaltherapy Centre. There are numerous different causes of headaches; one of those being cervicogenic headache [CH]. CH is a headache caused by a disorder of the neck and is usually accompanied by neck pain.
How do I know if I have a CH or another type of headache?
The typical features of a CH include unilateral (one side) head pain that does not shift from side to side, pain aggravated by external pressure on the same side of the upper neck, limited range of motion at the neck, and headaches triggered by neck movements or sustained postures.
What is the best headache treatment for CH?
A recent study compared upper cervical (neck) and upper thoracic (upper back) manipulation/adjustments (high velocity low amplitude thrust techniques) against mobilisations (slow, rhythmical, oscillating techniques). Results found that the adjustment group had a greater reduction in neck pain and a larger decrease in headache intensity, frequency and duration when compared to the mobilisation group. From this we can deduce that headache treatment involving spinal manipulation, may help you with your CH. The full article is attached at the bottom of this page.
At The Physicaltherapy Centre, treatment of CH is individualised to the patient, although often includes massage, A.R.T., dry needling, rehabilitation exercises and adjustments (where appropriate). The combination of therapeutic modalities for your headache treatment, will depend on your own specific patient history. Many factors come into play when devising a headache treatment plan, specifically, age; occupation; aetiology; intensity; duration of symptoms; and imaging (if available). If you suffer neck pain but without headache pain, read this article for other suggestions on the best course of management.
