What is theMcKenzie Method?

Developed by world renown physiotherapist, Robin McKenzie, the McKenzie Method is a three step process of assessment, treatment and the prevention most commonly for neck and back pain. The method is mostly recognised as a self-help strategy in that patients heal themselves by following a series of prescribed individualised exercises.

The McKenzie method is an internationally acclaimed method of assessment and treatment for spinal and extremity pain. It has been widely used all over the world for more than 30 years. Clinicians are trained to assess and diagnose all areas of the musculoskeletal system. If there is a problem in or around the spine, joints or muscles, an evaluation may be appropriate.

The philosophy of active patient involvement and education is trusted and used by clinicians and patients all over the world for back, neck and extremity problems.

The approach continues to be one of the most researched physical therapy based methods available today.

The initial assessment involves a safe and reliable way to reach an accurate diagnosis, and only then devise an appropriate treatment plan. Expensive imaging, such as MRI, is often unnecessary.  Clinicians are able to determine quickly whether the method will be effective for each individual.

The McKenzie Method is a comprehensive approach based on sound principles and fundamentals that, when fully understood and followed, is very successful.

Most importantly, by learning how to self-treat their problems, patients gain an understanding of how to minimise the risk of recurrence and in the event of re-injury, deal with it accordingly.

Sometimes two patients will have pretty much the exact same problem, but strangely, respond to completely different forms of treatment. Practising the McKenzie Method has allowed me another angle of approach to neck and back pain. Having this extra string to my bow allows me to take another shot at helping those in need of relief. — Tom
